A Reflection on 2017

THOUGHTS + PHOTOGRAPHY

Since the holiday season is slowly coming to an end, and 2017 is also, we remember the good and bad that embodied our year. From the experiences and spoken words of my family, friends, tweets I've read on Twitter, and numerous horoscopes I've sought out online, I feel as though we, as individuals, have gone on a journey since the fall of 2015 to the present day.

Although it seems as though our journey to the other side a dark tunnel has ended, our lives have begun a new chapter by reflecting on the challenges we have been able to overcome.

Crying at random times over political events; strife in the world. Hurricane Harvey, Las Vegas, Trump, Net Neutrality, terrorism and nuclear weapons. It seemed as though we were lost in the news, and allowed negative thoughts to affect who we are in our own lives.

In my opinion it's totally okay to constantly update yourself on what's happening in other countries around the world. However, when you bombard yourself with devastating news story upon news story, the content that you soak up every day can become overwhelming, even for your own brain to handle. You become distraught and extremely stressed. You think that our world couldn't fall into a more disastrous state than it already is in. And eventually, it rises in proportion with your own increasing panic.

By letting yourself sulk in everyone's grief around you, you lose sense of your own identity. From my experiences in 2017, I have learned to channel this negative energy to at least try and create some form of positivity in my own life. Becoming more involved with clubs at school, closer to some friends I've made recently, and actively being more present of my own problems has helped me improve tremendously. You can do the same and can make a difference by improving your own self first. After you focus on bettering your own mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health, you can be able to branch out to those around you.

Carry thoughts of change into 2018. Small change that you can check off of your list every day. Progress takes time, but it's your own grind that can truly contribute to the world we want to see. Our generation will be the change that we want to see.

Small bits of love = humongous amounts of growth towards acceptance and passion towards creating change in our own communities.
