self care tips (1-35):
Summer break has given me an ample amount of time to slooooooow down, get much needed rest, and work on my mental and physical health. Here are some tips that I would have given to my sophomore self (2 years ago) when I struggled under the pressures of balancing my schoolwork + mental health + physical health + other responsibilities/commitments that would have prevented the toll put on my overall well-being.
1. Sleep is your best friend~!
2. Don't be so hard on yourself
3. Eat small & frequent meals throughout the day (to prevent the after school kanak attack)
4. Turn off your phone for at least 1-3 hours every day
5. Clean up certain sections of your room EVERY DAY to increase your productivity
6. Make sure to dust spaces that you don't normally touch on a frequent basis (good for da allergies)
7. Tidy up your desk area for future projects/homework
8. Go for a 10 min walk around your block
9. Bike around your neighborhood for 10-15 mins to relieve stress and think about life
10. Drink 8-10 glasses of water EVERY DAY!!! So important to prevent headaches and stay hydrated.
11. Make sure to have other projects to work on/look forward to on the side besides doing your homework to work towards your purpose/what you want to be in life.
12. Start a bullet journal to consolidate all of your tasks, what's on your mind, and create goals for the present and the future
13. Be kind to others, but most importantly yourself (that's why I made this self-care list!)
14. Don't sweat the small things - your worries will pass eventually and you'll wondering why you worried so much
15. Find quotes/mantras that you like and put them in places where you can see them every day for inspiration to keep moving forward and in a positive direction; i.e. above your desk, on your fridge, as the lock screen or background of your phone
16. Make sure to talk about anything that you may be facing with someone that you can trust. Don't bottle up your emotions, you are not alone in your battles. There are plenty of people that love you and want to support you and see you grow!
17. Go thrifting with someone that you know or love and look through the racks by every single piece of clothing and find something that speaks to your own sense of fashion or style. You never know what next treasure you'll find next!
18. Meditate. Smiling Mind (search on the app store) is a good app when you're feeling anxious, depressed, or stressed out.
19. Rather than focusing on negatives, find small little things in your life that you're grateful for. i.e. a warm, comfy bed to sleep in at night, family/friends that love you, your most favorite food, your favorite tea, your favorite book, your favorite song, your favorite album by The Beatles, your most favorite place to explore - the list goes on and on. Thinking about the small positive things in your life every day helps you see what life has to offer right now in the present and in the next few years, or even decades of your life.
20. Practice/play and play and instrument, or simply make music. Singing to your songs that remind you of what genuine compassion, love, and curiosity and lust for life feel like.
21. Sing in the shower. You sound great, babe.
22. Take a bath.
23. Go to the beach.
24. Make sure to moisturize your skin. Your skin thirsts just like how you're body thirsts on a hot day or when you're dehydrated.
25. If something doesn't work out, don't cry over spilled milk. Move on. Your mind will thank you for it. A good crying session helps every now and then.
26. In the morning, rather than going on your phone, make sure that you turn on music that you love and dance and get your body moving :)
27. Tumeric lattes. They're good for you inside and out and they're delicious. Here's a recipe to one.
28. Prayer; sorry if you're not religious, but prayer, in your darkest times may seem like an abstract, but mysterious concept but is another great way to prevent keeping your emotions from being bottled up.
29. Print out photos at Walmart or Costco of people, memories and places that you love and pin/tape them on your wall. They'll help to remind you daily when you wake up in the morning and before you shut your eyes at night of things that you can constantly find gratefulness, gratitude, and happiness in.
30. Even if you suck at painting, if you're feeling intense emotions, paint something. Put on some music and pour your heart out to the art that you're creating.
31. If you need something to distract yourself, watch these youtubers. I have a post of my favorite ones.
32. Taking a long & hot shower after a long day
33. Putting a little bit of apple cider vinegar on a cutip and applying it to a freshly popped pimple can prevent it from growing back stronger! (from my own experience), (also this is really random, lol)
34. Watching your favorite movie or musical/movie. Mines is Grease.
35. Burn/buy a nice smelling candle to relax
